Eligibility

The Hong Kong International Operatic Singing Competition 2018 is open to young professional artists and recent graduates and trainees in the art of western operatic singing of all nationalities.

Applicants must be between 18-35 years old.

(Applicants must be born within the period of 1 July 1983 to 30 June 2000, both dates inclusive.)

Prize winners at other competitions are eligible to apply.

At all stages of the Competition the jury will look for:

  • Vocal quality
  • Technical skill
  • Musical interpretation
  • Artistic personality

Application Materials

Applicants must complete the Application Form, and submit it together with the following documents and materials:

  • A photocopy of Hong Kong Identity Card for Applicants based in Hong Kong
  • A photocopy of currently valid passport page showing nationality and date of birth for Applicants not based in Hong Kong
  • At least one letter of recommendation, from either the Applicant’s
    • singing teacher(s),
    • music education institution(s),
    • opera company(ies), or
    • other references 
  • Any recommendation that is not in Chinese or English should be accompanied by a translation.
  • A curriculum vitae (biographical summary or résumé)
  • A documentary record of achievements and past performances including competitions previously participated
  • A video recording of the Applicant’s own performance between 12 and 20 minutes. It should be recorded after 30 April 2017.

Applicants must truthfully and accurately complete the Application form. The Organiser will disqualify anyone who supplies any misleading or inaccurate information or breaches any of these Rules.

Application Fee

Each applicant must pay an Application Fee of USD70 or the equivalent amount in other currencies according to the exchange rates on the day of the submission. This fee will be used to cover partially the costs of processing the applications.

Payment should be made via PayPal, or by bank transfer.

Travel to Hong Kong

Competitors selected for the Semi-Final Round should be present in Hong Kong no later than 28 June 2018 (Thursday). 

Competitors who are not Hong Kong-based must arrange and pay their own round trip airfare.  The total cost of bringing the Competitor’s own piano accompanist for the Semi-Final Round will be the responsibility of the Competitor. 

The Organiser will provide Competitors with free lodging as well as transport subsidies for activities directly related to the Competition during the period 28 June – 3 July 2018. 

Programme Selection

Competitors must submit their complete programmes for both the Semi-Final Round and the Final Round.  

For the Semi-Finals, Competitors must also send copies of vocal scores of the music of their chosen programmes, in the correct key with any cuts and variations clearly marked.  This requirement is to ensure that compatible and appropriate piano accompaniment will be provided by the Organiser and to facilitate judgement by the Jury.  No changes of programmes will be accepted after 1 April 2018.

Competitors must choose different programmes from the Repertory for their performances in the Semi-Final and Final Rounds of the Competition.
