HKIOSC 2018 commenced today, 10 Finalists to be announced tomorrow

(Hong Kong, 29 June 2018) — The inaugural Hong Kong International Operatic Singing Competition kicks off today with the first round of semi-finals as 24 young aspirants try to sing their way to one of the richest prizes in opera. 10 Finalists will be announced after the end of Semi-final Rounds on the 30th June.

The competition, open to singers under the age of 35, is administered by Hong Kong’s Musica Viva. Selected from a total of 148 entries from 25 countries, the semi-finalists include seven singers from Korea, making up the single largest contingent, five from China, and one each from Indonesia and the Philippines. The remaining competitors hail from Russia, the United States, Britain, South Africa and Scandinavia. The jury is chaired by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and includes singers Sumi Jo and Dennis O’Neill as well the Royal Opera House’s casting director Peter Katona and Musica Viva’s Director-General, Lo Kingman.

“Musica Viva’s vision,” said Lo Kingman, “is to be an active organisation of creative originality continuously promoting the performing arts in their diverse forms and genres, reaching for the highest international standards particularly in the appreciation, education, study and performance of music, opera, and vocal art.

“One of Musica Viva’s most important missions is to create and extend opportunities of professional career development for budding artists by presenting performances and mounting productions on the strength of young talents. Organising the International Operatic Singing Competition is a means to achieving that goal.”

Competitors will also be able to take advantage of masterclasses conducted by the renowned singers on the jury as well as auditions by international advisors from Opera di Roma and the Elena Obratzsova Cultural Centre for singers hoping to participate in young artist programs in Italy and Russia.
