Hong Kong International Operatic Singing Competition 2018

Musica Viva Limited, organiser of the Hong Kong International Operatic Singing Competition 2018, announce that as of 28 February 2018, the closing time for Applications to enter the Competition, a total of 148 applications (including 11 incomplete applications) had been received.
The Preliminary Selection Committee is in the process of making recommendations to the International Jury (chaired by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa) who will determine the list of candidates to be invited to compete in the Semi-Final Round in Hong Kong on 29th and 30th June 2018.
A shortlist of 24 candidates will be admitted to the Semi-Final (29th and 30th June 2018) and 10 to the Final Round (2nd July 2018). Each singer will perform a programme of operatic arias at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall with piano accompaniment during the Semi-Finals and with the orchestra, Hong Kong Virtuosi, in the Final Gala Concert.
Activities and Events Associated with the Competition
Other activities scheduled include: masterclasses to be hosted by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Madam Sumi Jo and Professor Dennis O’neill on 30th June and 1st July 2018; public talks to be given by Mr Peter Katona on “Things Young Singers Must Do to Begin a Professional Operatic Career” on 1st July 2018; and public talk by Madam Irina Tchernova, Director of Elena Obraztsova Cultural Centre at St. Petersburg, Russia, and Mr. Paolo Petrocelli, representative of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, on operatic career opportunities in Russia and Italy respectively, on 2nd July 2018. Both organisations from St. Petersburg and Rome also hold auditions exclusively for Hong Kong artists wishing to participate in their artistic programmes. Four prizes may be awarded in our competition and the first prize is an USD 15,000 cash prize, a Gold Medal, a Diploma of Distinction and a contract for a role in a Musica Viva opera production and/or a solo part in a concert performance. The cash prizes and medals are generously sponsored by Chow Sang Sang.
